How to: Travel on a Student Budget

by | May 14, 2021 | Uncategorized

We’ve all been wanderlusting students once… how to make it happen?

You know that moment that you’re sitting on a school bench looking out the window or painfully trying to finish an assignment, and then you see a friend post a travel picture? The very definition of jealousy. And we’ve all been there! The world is becoming a friendlier place for student pockets all the time, but we want to share the best tips on how to travel on a student budget, so that soon enough your feed will be lit 🔥 with travel photos with awesome TripMates!

Accommodation: share it when you can!

Accommodation often ends up being one of the biggest expenses on trips, which is why the best idea is to stay at a hostel in a shared room or get a group of TripMates to share an Airbnb with you. Often in big cities like London, Stockholm, Paris or Tokyo, hostels make for a great option, and you’ll find many of them, too. Having an Airbnb shared with TripMates, though, will enable you to have your ‘own space’, and you can even cook your own meals- another way to save costs! If you don’t have TripMates yet, explore upcoming unique trips at JoinMyTrip that maybe you’d like to be a part of…

The man is richest whose pleasures are the cheapest

In Henry David Thoreau’s words, this is completely true! Often free activities end up being also the most fun. For example in cities, the best thing to often do is to go on a free walking tour, where you get to know the city for a very small price tag. If you’re staying at a hostel, just ask the hostel reception. Otherwise, you can easily find the departure spots for free tours online. Plus, you might meet some awesome people along the way!

Free walking tours aren’t the only fun-free activity. For example, often museums are also free for students, so just make sure to bring your student ID along! Or, if you’re in Paris, what better than to go on a picnic in one of the city’s many parks? Our recommendation is the Jardin des Tuileries. Anyways, just get creative with your TripMates and brainstorm some fun ideas… one of you is bound to think of something fun.

Plan for budget-friendly activities: nature is one of your best bets!

Public transport!

Don’t be afraid of using public transport to your travel destination… it can also be one of the most fun ways to discover the city! Although, if you’re a student, you’re most likely quite familiar with public transport already. Also, try to see if the city/place you’re traveling to has a day pass or week pass or even better, a student pass, for public transport. Renting a bike can also be a fun way to explore a new place! And what’s even cooler is that both of these options make for some sustainable travel choices

Take advantage of off-season

Seriously, the off-season is most of the time the best time to travel, because the crowds are less and everything is slightly cheaper! Often people may have the perception that the weather will suck and the destination won’t be as nice during the off-season, but the case might be the opposite! You’ll get to see a different side of your travel destination, and you’ll get to explore it in peace and quiet.

Go in a group

One of the best ways to save money while traveling as a student is to go in a group. Because, well, you get to split costs. Even renting a car, if it is full of people, you’re not breaking the bank. Eating, accommodation, and transport all become much easier when you have a bunch of people with you. Plus, wouldn’t you want to meet awesome people from around the world? Here’s you can have the perfect group travel experience!

Study while traveling

There are many ways where you can work or study while you travel. One of the best ways is by going on a CoWorking trip, where you get to work/study during the days, while you spend weekends and evenings exploring a new place with your newly found CoWorking friends. We have tips on how you can find a CoWorking trip that suits you! We can assure you, writing that essay while chillin’ by the pool is much better than sitting in a classroom.
